Kickstarter pre-orders open for Shtetl, a new board game

In the game, players develop their own shtetl: welcoming new residents, constructing buildings, celebrating holidays, preparing traditional dishes, and guiding their community through the joys and challenges of a bygone era.

The game is inspired by the world of Jewish small towns in the region known in Jewish tradition as Raysn — present-day Belarus and neighbouring parts of the former Pale of Settlement. Its visual and historical details draw on real architectural prototypes, archival photographs, traditional townscapes, crafts, holidays, and social roles. This is not a “storybook shtetl”: a complex history has been carefully translated into an accessible and engaging game format.

The game was created by a team of researchers, artists, producers, editors, and game designers.

This unique project at the intersection of heritage, design, and pop culture is fully developed and ready for print. The Kickstarter campaign will help produce the first print run in two versions — Russian and English.

During the campaign, the game is available for pre-order. For orders of three or more copies, the team has prepared a special bonus: a limited-edition poster signed by the game’s artist, Vasily Grino.
